I remember way back when, a new technology was introduced. XML.
It was a touted as the next best thing. A real game changer.
People were worried it would replace object oriented programming. It had such high hopes.
And eventually the hype wore off. XML is baked into a lot of products today. It's part of everyday programming.
And Big Data was touted as the next best thing. A real game changer.
People were worried it would replace traditional data warehousing. It had such high hopes.
And eventually the hype wore off. Big Data is baked into a lot of products today. It's part of everyday programmers.
Change is the only constant. And patterns rise and fall. And repeat over and over again.
Big Data will be part of may applications going forward. It does handle some of the limitations of "smaller" data sets with the ability to handle huge volumes, structured and non structured and semi structured data with eventual consistency and SQL like languages.
Both XML and Big Data carved out new paths in a fixed world. They sprang out of the gate with much energy and eventually worked their way into the mainstream. They're both built on traditional frameworks, yet they extend them and provide greater capability, complimenting their traditional predecessors.
Perhaps a new technology will appear with high hopes. It looks like the Internet of Things IoT and Artificial Intelligence are the main forerunners. If you watch the waves over time, there will continue to be new technologies destined to make the current technology obsolete. However, there are still companies using mainframes and COBOL and FORTRAN.
Technology flows in waves. What's hot today may not be hot tomorrow. But something else is sure to take its place.
