Sticking with a Problem Until it's Solved

I've always been fascinated by people who excel at what they do.  And since I was young, I've pondered what makes these people so good.  And I still don't have a definitive answer.  Except I'll tell you this.  People who stick with a problem longer than others will be the winners at the end of the day.  Because the mental stamina to follow through on a solution with an unknown end date, takes perseverance.  There are some people, so called experts, who can read books and tell you everything you need to do on the basics, as long as everything goes as planned, there are no gotchas, typically these are consultants who come in, create a product and move on, with no intention of support.  However, it's the people who do the support, the ones who are on the hook for keeping the product running and the customers happy, these are the real hero's.  The one's who are still plugging away, long after everyone's gone home, the one's who make sure the code is ready for tomorrow when people walk in the door.  They don't necessarily get the spotlight more often than not, but if I see a programmer who gets immersed in a problem, such that they are curious about finding the solution, yet they tackle from all angles and stick with it until it's solved, that's the person I'd like to hire.  It's all about blending determination with creativity with play with focus with objectives with problem solving.  Not necessarily fame or money.

That's what I think, write and tell us what you think, P.O. Box 72 Omaha Nebraska and remember kids, integrity is doing the right thing when nobody's watching.
